Neighborhood Watch:

In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the need for strengthening and securing our communities has become even more critical, and Neighborhood Watch groups have taken on greater significance.

Most neighborhood crime prevention groups are organized around a block or a neighborhood. Most of these programs are started with assistance from a law enforcement agency, and make use of volunteers who donate time, and perhaps some resources; and many have no formal budget or source of funding.

The foundation for creating and maintaining neighborhood crime prevention groups (Neighborhood Watch) is based on the assumption that a group of people in the neighborhood can come together to reestablish informal control, and can thereby increase the quality of life and reduce the crime rate in the neighborhood. Neighborhood Crime Prevention is based on the objective of removing opportunities for people to commit crime rather than attempting to change an offender or motivation.

Most recently the Neighborhood Watch program has been assigned a much greater task. President Bush has asked that Neighborhood Watch Groups be enlisted in our war on terrorism. No greater tool could be found in this war than to have so many eyes constantly alert to the goings on around them. The President has also asked that we double the number of community watches, further securing our neighborhoods and increasing the knowledge for the terrorist that they are being watched.

Sheriff H.S. Caudill has embraced the idea of Neighborhood Watches and has made it known that his department will give each community the support they desire in setting up these programs. Officers have been assigned to various programs and instructed to work with the communities. The President's concern is National Security; likewise we are committed to our nations security, unlike the president we live in these communities. Our children attend these schools, our families these churches. We will not delay nor will we rest in the belief that it will never happen here. If your community is interested please contact Deputy Allison at eh Tazewell County Sheriff's Office.

Many people have expressed an interest in the Neighborhood in their communities and a strong desire to keep their communities safe. We will work with your community regardless of the circumstances, and will help you tailor a program to fit your communities individual needs. No community will be left out. Sheriff has made his office open to the communities of Tazewell Count. Deputies from the Sheriff's Office will attend meetings, help set up your programs, give direction and guidance when needed, as well as, keeping you informed of training and classes that may benefit your communities. Time spent securing your neighborhoods and helping our citizens feel safer as well as, reducing crime is far more beneficial to society than waiting until crime gets out of hand. Working together Tazewell County can become a place of distinction, not for its high crime, but for it's forward thinking, concern for it's citizens, and communities that are prosperous and caring for one another. If you see a crime happening, have information on a crime that has already happened or want to report a suspicious or unsettling behavior in your community use our tips link, or call the Sheriff's Office. Together we can take our communities back.
